Geothermal energy Kangasala, Nokia and surrounding areas

The cost-effectiveness of a geothermal heating system is mathematics and does not need to be supported by empty advertising promises.

Geothermal energy is the most sensible form of heating for most buildings.

Geothermal energy is pure solar heat.

When the sun shines, the earth’s surface warms up. The sun heats the soil all year round, not just in the summer. An efficient geothermal well collects this heat efficiently as water is absorbed into the soil. There is so much heat in the ground and rock that it does not run out even in winter. Geothermal energy is efficient, environmentally friendly and affordable energy.

Kyrönlahden Porakaivo naturally also has solid experience in drilling geothermal wells. We operate in the Kangasala, Nokia,
and the entire Pirkanmaa region.

Geothermal well – everything you need to know

The heart of a geothermal heating system is a properly dimensioned and professionally drilled geothermal well. It is a vertical hole that extends deep into the rock, into which a heat collection pipe system is installed. This pipe system transfers the renewable energy from the ground to your property’s heating system. At Kyrönlahden Porakaivo, we specialize in implementing these energy wells in the Pirkanmaa region.

How is a geothermal well drilled?

Drilling a geothermal well is a precise job that progresses in stages. The process always begins with careful planning, where we ensure the best possible location for the well on your plot. We take into account the locations of buildings, plantings and other wells, as well as the characteristics of the soil on the plot.

  1. Arrival of equipment:  We bring modern and efficient drilling equipment to the site, which can operate even in tight spaces without unnecessarily damaging the lawn or plantings.
  2. Drilling phase:  We drill a hole with a diameter of typically 115–140 mm. The drilling depth depends entirely on the energy needs of your property. During the drilling work, we carefully protect the environment and control the stone dust generated from the drilling with water.
  3. Installation of the collector pipe system:  Once the required depth has been reached, the geothermal well is pressurized with clean water and a closed heat collector pipe system is lowered into it. The pipe system is filled with a heat transfer fluid, which is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly mixture.
  4. Finishing:  After installation, the site is cleaned up and the top of the well is finished appropriately. The end result is an almost invisible geothermal well, with a cover that remains level with the ground.

The entire process usually only takes 1–2 days, after which the HVAC contractor can connect the well to the heat pump.

How deep a geothermal well is needed?

This is the most common question, and the answer is: it depends. A properly sized geothermal well is the key to an efficient and economical system. Factors that affect the depth of the well include:

  • Size and age of the property:  A larger and older, less well-insulated house requires more heating energy and therefore a deeper well.
  • Number of residents and consumption habits:  Hot water consumption has a significant impact on energy demand.
  • Soil quality:  The thermal conductivity of bedrock varies. For example, moist, water-containing rock transfers heat better than dry rock, so a slightly shallower geothermal well may be sufficient.
  • Geothermal heat pump output:  The system is a whole, where the pump and well must be in balance.

A typical geothermal well for a detached house is 120–220 meters deep. We always calculate the exact dimensions based on your site, so you get the most out of your system without unnecessary costs.

Geothermal well location and required permits

According to the law, a geothermal well must be located at least 7.5 meters from the neighbor’s boundary, unless otherwise agreed with the neighbor. When planning the location, it is also important to consider the distances to your own or your neighbor’s domestic water well, as well as underground wires and cables. Drilling usually requires a permit from the municipality. We help our customers with permit issues if necessary and ensure that all regulations are met.
